Reading is a family affair and we encourage parents to help maintain their child’s skills by having them read over the summer. The library is working with Russell Elementary School by offering reading incentives and specialized book lists. Children going into grades one through five can come in to complete a list of activities, and middle school students (grades six through eight) have a list of several books to choose from as well as many “just for fun” books. The following are examples of how parents can encourage reading over the summer months: Let your children see you reading, read to young children daily, read a chapter book to your school-age children by reading aloud one or two chapters every day, encourage your children to spend time reading and looking at books, and talk with your children about what they are reading. We at the library will be happy to find books that are just right for your child......... “Dig Into Reading”, the 2013 summer reading program will begin Wednesday, July 10th at 3:30pm and will continue each Wednesday until mid-August. Children of all ages are invited to learn more about the wonders at our feet—buried treasure, evidence of ancient civilizations, dinosaur bones and more. Books, activities and crafts will be used to make new discoveries this summer. The first story time on July 10th will have the theme “Dirt Movers and Shakers.” Here’s a hint for the activity of the day: plan to get dirty! Children should wear play clothes so we can get our hands dirty with a special fun, rainy or sunny day project........ July 18th is ‘Third Thursday’ and the Annual Ice Cream Social! The library and the museum next door will be open until 8 pm. In addition to exploring the Museum and checking out books at the library, you can enjoy an outdoor musical concert by Rusty Bones on the Turbynes’ lawn. Bring a chair or a blanket, settle in, listen to the music and partake of some delicious ice cream. This free event, for the folks of Rumney, is sponsored by the Rumney Historical Society and we welcome all ages to join us. It starts at 6 PM and will run until 8.......... Just a reminder to the Knitting Ladies… our next get-together is Thursday, July 11th at 2. I wonder what kind of cookies Helen will be making! Come and find out!........ July already! The library will close at 5 pm on Wednesday, July 3rd and will be closed on July 4th. We wish everyone a safe and fun holiday with lots of reading time!.........

Summertime involves all sorts of digging: planting in the garden, searching for special shells and other treasures, learning more about creatures who live underground, and other exciting exploring. Libraries are great places to start digging around for all kinds of information, activities and fun. This summer, children’s librarians across New Hampshire are participating in the national Collaborative Summer Library Program by creating special summertime programs based on this year’s slogan, “Dig Into Reading.” Readers of all ages are encouraged to visit our library in Rumney and make crafts, foods and music related to what can be discovered when you start to dig. It all starts July 7th!
